YouTube Thumbnail HD Downloader
Download YouTube thumbnails in HD — the standard 1280×720 file every HD upload has, plus the sharper 1920×1080 original whenever YouTube stores one.

What “HD” Means for a YouTube Thumbnail
YouTube keeps two kinds of HD thumbnail. The classic one is maxresdefault.jpg at 1280×720, created for every video uploaded in HD. Many videos also have an original-aspect-ratio file, oar2.jpg, which can be a full 1920×1080 (or a vertical 1080×1920 for Shorts).
This tool checks both and marks the sharpest one as Best available, so you never have to guess which file is bigger.
When the HD Version Is Not Available
YouTube only creates the 1280×720 file if the video was uploaded in HD. Older or low-quality uploads may not have it. When that happens, this tool automatically shows the next largest size that does exist, so you still walk away with the best possible image.
YouTube Thumbnail Size: The Official Specs
If you are making a thumbnail rather than downloading one, these are YouTube's current upload recommendations:
- Videos: 16:9, ideally 3840×2160, at least 640 pixels wide. 1280×720 is still the most common size.
- Shorts: 9:16, ideally 2160×3840, at least 640 pixels tall.
- Format: JPG or PNG.
- File size: up to 50 MB from a computer, 2 MB from the mobile app.
Whatever you upload, YouTube shows viewers resized JPG copies, and the largest one it serves publicly is 1920×1080. That is why no downloader can go higher. Read the full thumbnail size guide for safe zones and text tips.

Frequently Asked Questions
What resolution is a YouTube HD thumbnail?
The standard HD thumbnail is 1280x720 (maxresdefault.jpg). Many videos also have a 1920x1080 original (oar2.jpg), and the tool shows it whenever it exists.
Why can't I get the HD version of some videos?
If a video was not uploaded in HD, YouTube never generated the 1280x720 thumbnail. The tool then falls back to the largest available size automatically.
Is there a 4K YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube now accepts 4K thumbnail uploads, but it only serves resized copies publicly. The largest is 1920x1080, so no tool can download a true 4K file.
