Where the 1080p Thumbnail Comes From
Besides the classic sizes, YouTube stores an original aspect ratio file called oar2.jpg. On many HD videos it is a genuine 1920×1080 image; on Shorts it is a vertical 1080×1920. It lives at https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/oar2.jpg.
When it exists, the tool shows it as Original with its real pixel size and marks it Best available.
When a Video Has No 1080p File
Older uploads, and many music and entertainment videos, only have the 1280×720 maxresdefault.jpg. In that case nobody can give you a real 1080p file, and sites that claim otherwise are stretching the 720p image. If you need a bigger picture anyway, download the 720p file and enlarge it with an AI upscaler, knowing the extra detail is generated rather than recovered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a 1080p YouTube thumbnail?
Yes, when the video has one. Many HD videos carry a 1920x1080 original (oar2.jpg). Paste the link and the tool shows it automatically; if it is missing, the largest file is 1280x720.
How do I know if a video has a 1080p thumbnail?
Paste the link. If an Original card appears at 1920×1080, it does. If the best option is Max-Res HD at 1280×720, the video has no 1080p file.
Is upscaling to 1080p worth it?
Only when the video has no real 1080p file and you need a large print or wallpaper. For web use, the native file is sharp enough and avoids upscaling artifacts.
