Download YouTube Thumbnail as WebP

Need a YouTube thumbnail as WebP? YouTube serves JPG. Download the original here, then convert to WebP for smaller files — here is what to expect.

Why WebP?

WebP usually produces smaller files than JPG at similar quality, which is handy for fast-loading websites. YouTube does keep WebP copies of the classic sizes at https://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.webp (swap in hqdefault, sddefault and so on). Open that address and use Save image as to get the WebP directly.

Converting to WebP

Use an image editor or an online converter to export the downloaded JPG as WebP. Because the JPG is already compressed, converting to WebP will not add detail — it mainly reduces file size for web use. For maximum quality keep the original JPG; for a lighter web asset, WebP is a good choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download a YouTube thumbnail as WebP?

Yes. YouTube keeps WebP copies at i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.webp. Open that URL and save it, or download the JPG here and convert it.

Is WebP better than JPG for thumbnails?

WebP is usually smaller at similar quality, which helps page speed. It will not improve an already-compressed JPG's detail.

Will converting to WebP lose quality?

A high-quality WebP export looks virtually identical. Very aggressive compression can introduce artifacts, so keep quality settings reasonable.
