The Truth About “4K” YouTube Thumbnails
YouTube now recommends uploading thumbnails at 3840×2160. Viewers never receive that file, though: YouTube re-encodes it into smaller JPGs, and the largest one it serves publicly is the 1920×1080 original (oar2.jpg), followed by the 1280×720 maxresdefault.jpg.
So a genuine 4K download is not possible from any site. When a tool shows a “4K” button, it is relabeling or upscaling one of those files.
Getting a Larger Image with AI Upscaling
If you truly need a bigger image, download the largest original here and run it through an AI upscaler such as a Real-ESRGAN-based tool. The output can look sharp, but it is generated detail, not the real thumbnail at 4K. We would rather tell you that than print a fake number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube have 4K thumbnails?
It accepts 4K uploads but only serves resized copies. The largest public file is 1920x1080 on videos that have an original-aspect file, otherwise 1280x720.
Why do other sites claim 4K?
They are relabeling the 1280x720 or 1920x1080 file, or upscaling it with software. The source image is never 4K.
Can I upscale a thumbnail to 4K?
Yes, using an AI upscaler on the downloaded file. The result is enlarged and enhanced, but it is not a true 4K capture.
