YouTube Thumbnail Size & Resolutions Explained (2026 Guide)
YouTube thumbnail size in 2026: 16:9 up to 3840×2160 (1280×720 minimum target), JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB. Plus Shorts 9:16, download sizes and safe zones.
Getting the thumbnail size right matters for one simple reason: a mis-sized image gets cropped, stretched, or rejected. Here’s the complete, current breakdown of YouTube thumbnail dimensions — for uploading your own and for understanding the sizes you download.
The correct upload size
YouTube raised its thumbnail specs. The current official recommendation for a custom thumbnail:
- Resolution: as large as possible, ideally 3840×2160 (4K). 1280×720 is still the most common size and looks fine.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 for regular videos, 9:16 for Shorts, 1:1 for podcast playlists
- Minimum width: 640 pixels (Shorts: minimum height 640 pixels)
- Max file size: 50 MB when uploading from a computer; 2 MB from the mobile app
- Formats: JPG or PNG (YouTube serves every thumbnail back to viewers as JPEG)
Design at 3840×2160 if your tools allow it, or at least 1280×720, and you’ll never be cropped on a standard video. If your image is the wrong shape, resize it to 16:9 before uploading — and preview it first with the thumbnail tester to see exactly how it reads across YouTube.
Every resolution YouTube serves
After upload, YouTube generates a fixed set of sizes on its CDN. When you download a thumbnail, these are what’s available:
| Name | File | Pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original | oar2.jpg |
Up to 1920×1080 (Shorts 1080×1920) | Original aspect ratio — the largest public file, on most Shorts and many HD videos |
| Max res | maxresdefault.jpg |
1280×720 | The classic HD file — on every video uploaded in HD |
| Standard | sddefault.jpg |
640×480 | 4:3 letterboxed |
| High | hqdefault.jpg |
480×360 | Always available |
| Medium | mqdefault.jpg |
320×180 | 16:9 |
| Default | default.jpg |
120×90 | Playlists, strips |
The largest file YouTube serves publicly is 1920×1080, and only on videos that have an oar2.jpg. Even if you upload a 4K thumbnail, there is no 4K download tier, no matter what some tools claim. The full explanation is in Can you download a 4K YouTube thumbnail?, and the exact URLs are in how to get a thumbnail URL.
Shorts are different (9:16)
YouTube Shorts are vertical, so their thumbnails use a 9:16 ratio rather than 16:9. YouTube recommends uploading Shorts covers at 2160×3840, and serves them back as a vertical oar2.jpg of usually 1080×1920. If you’re working with Shorts, treat them separately — grab and study them with the Shorts thumbnail downloader.
Safe zones: keep text away from the corners
Your thumbnail is displayed at many sizes, and two areas get covered:
- Bottom-right corner — the video duration badge sits here. Keep important text and faces out of it.
- All four edges — different surfaces crop slightly. Keep key elements within the central ~90%.
Because the same image shrinks to a tiny sidebar strip and a full-width mobile card, the real test is legibility at small sizes. Load your design into the thumbnail tester and check the mobile and sidebar views — if the text isn’t readable there, simplify it.
File format: JPG, PNG or WebP?
- JPG — smallest files; YouTube converts everything to JPEG for viewers anyway, so it’s the safe upload choice.
- PNG — best when you need crisp text or transparency in your working file; download existing thumbnails as PNG via download as PNG.
- WebP — great for web use elsewhere; see download as WebP.
